In Santiago, our desire is to be people of influence. We are leading three church plants. The first church plant is in the middle upper class area of Santiago. The second church plant is a Haitian church that has been birthed out of prayer walking. The third is a potentially explosive work right next to the canal where we are placing a Water Station.
Proyecto Bernabe (Project Barnabas) is an expression of compassion carved out through a year of prayer, fasting and monthly travel to Santiago. In that context, we have built relationships and discovered three areas of emphasis in a poor area of Santiago called Cien Fuegos, a community of about 300,000 people. The goal is that all three areas will be Dominican led. Because of relationships, an office has been given to Proyecto Bernabe to develop these areas:
- Clean Water-Collaborating with Association Presidents, local churches and local businessmen, we are committed to contend for property close to a canal that runs parallel to Cien Fuegos. Because of favor and relationships, we have good news! The Water Station has been approved by the city of Santiago! We are raising funds for a permanent water station that will cost about $15,000, a one time expense that will provide clean water for a lifetime. Clean water means better health and a hope for the next generation.
- Health Education-We have brought successful medical teams to Cien Fuegos the past two years. Another team is scheduled Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, 2010. This will be by far the largest team we have ever had. It will be hosted in the City Hall of Cien Fuegos, an offer from the Business Men’s Association which we are now a part of. How do you influence an area for better health if you don’t have on-going education? Our second area of influence is Health Education. Working with local clinic/hospital officials, we are developing on-going Health Education tracks to change a community. Health Care teams we host will always include this emphasis besides the compassion/care they provide.
- Micro-finance-In a historic meeting with the Business Men’s Association of Cien Fuegos the first steps for Micro-Finance were taught. From that meeting, an official invitation was extened to Barnabas Task to participate with the leadership of this Association to develop Micro-Finance in Cien Fuegos. Collaborating with local businessmen as well churches and processing diligently, a long-term plan is being developed so that people without hope are empowered for income and the building of self-esteem. It starts with one, then another. Business-minded individuals will speak into the lives of these businessmen when visiting Santiago.
